LUCY MEIN  ||  ARCHITECT

“Design, Build & Deliver”

This for me is a lifelong passion. I am a creative and inspired individual who thrives under pressure, with a drive to complete multiple, detailed tasks on schedule without losing sight of overall aims and strategy.

I completed my architectural education at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a First Class MA(Hons) and a Distinction in the MArch. The diversity of the courses at ESALA have nurtured and inspired a passion in social, physical and economic infrastructure, and allowed me to pursue these themes through stimulating design modules and research opportunities.

Having 15 months experience working in infrastructure, specifically working across three new Crossrail stations, these themes are prevalent in my understanding of the responsibility of the architect. I have also had experience of working with conservation architects on the repair and conservation of important historical buildings, and am interested in creating architecture that is attentive and reactive to its environment, shaping the society around it.

I qualified as an architect in March 2022, fulfilling a 15 year dream to be able to call myself an architect! I am currently working for Groves-Raines Architects Studios Ltd. in Leith, Edinburgh. I have worked across a variety of sectors during my time with the practice, but my main projects currently are situated in the Highlands of Scotland, and involve the sensitive restoration of an old farmers cottage as a part of a wider masterplan within the Sutherland region.

Outside of work, I am a keen athlete, ex-elite gymnast and enjoy the thrill of adrenaline sports such as rock climbing and surfing. I also enjoy volunteering as a youth leader at my church, and play guitar and ukulele in the worship band. On weekends you will usually find me cycling around Scotland, or doing handstands at any opportunity!

2016-2018

SUMMER 2017

PART I PLACEMENT POSITION
MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE   WITH   DISTINCTION
EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY

The Masters course was a chance to explore in detail specific areas of architecture that have been foremost in my understanding of the responsibility of the architect. This culminated in a thesis project that was able to test theories of social, physical and economic infrastructures, but in the context of real-life issues and themes that resonated significantly in my own architectural development.

HAWKINS\BROWN ARCHITECTS

A summer spend working across two Crossrail Stations: Liverpool Street & Bond Street stations. Main tasks involved using Microstation and Bentley Building Suite, working to Crossrail standards to deliver the coordinated BIM model and drawing packages for the stations.

2012-2016

MA(HONS) ARCHITECTURE,  FIRST CLASS

JULY 2016

CHARLES MCKEAN MEMORIAL AWARD
SCOTTISH CASTLES ASSOCIATION & RIAS

This award is for the best architecture student design for the reoccupation and extension of a ruinous tower house or castle. Our winning design comprised a scheme to revitalise the ruined Preston Tower in Prestonpans by proposing a new craft glass workshop within the walled garden, with an attached café and exhibition spaces. In addition, concerned about the disconnect between the town and the tower, the students created an interactive trail through the town’s industrial and cultural heritage, using the popular treasure-hunting phone app ‘Geocaching’.

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY

The diversity of the MA(Hons) programme, including the Integrated Placement scheme that Edinburgh University offers, has provided me with a rich and comprehensive learning environment, and has fuelled my passion for architecture and encouraged me to explore what it means to design.
